Every contract enquiry, irrespective of size, begins with an initial consultation between Stortford Interiors and the interested client, their representative or architect, to establish the breadth and size of the required work and precise client needs.

Based on the established objectives, Stortford Interiors then submits a proposal to the client. The proposal would include fixed price cost estimates, and could include recommendations on design, materials, colours, textures and styles.

Once awarded the contract, Stortford Interiors would nominate a Contract Manager, together with a highly skilled team to carry out the installation work and oversee the project through to completion.

The Contract Manager is responsible for ensuring the agreed schedule is adhered to, that last minute changes to plan can be accommodated, and that the client receives regular progress and project tracking reports. Throughout the entire project there is constant consultation with the client to ensure total customer satisfaction.

The Thomas Deacon Academy


Queen’s Gardens, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

Scope of work:partitions, glazed screens, doors and frames

The performance requirements for this project included for the glazed screens to meet the Academy criteria of withstanding a crowd pressure point loading of 1.5kN, 30 minute fire rated double glazed screens, and meet an acoustic performance of 42db.

One of the largest state schools in Europe and most expensive state school in Britain, costing £46m, The Thomas Deacon Academy opened in September 2007.

Stortford Interiors worked closely with Laing O’Rourke and Foster & Partners to provide a performance solution to the design requirements of this prestigious project.

Stortford Interiors supplied and installed floor to slab Komfort Polar Double Glazed/PolarTec partitioning systems together with curved feature areas. The installation also included the supply of doors and over panels, as well as integrated fire rated glazed doors to the glazed screens.

 

Donovan Data Systems

Scope of work:Gustaf Real Wood demountable suspended ceiling systems and British Gypsum plasterboard bulkheads and monolithic ceilings

Donavon Data Systems moved their new data centre and European headquarters to the Blue Fin Building in October 2007. The building embraces the latest thinking on efficient working and reduced environmental impact. The project brief to the architects 11.04 was to create an intelligent modern office environment using recycled, natural and sustainable materials and technology, and a working environment that would be both comfortable and satisfying for staff and visitors.

The project gave Stortford Interiors the rare opportunity to install a Gustaf real wood ceiling within an extensive network of M/F margins and bulkheads.

An extremely fast-track project comprising a wealth of architecturally complex details in an installation over four floors comprising offices, IT training suites, a Boardroom, Restaurant and Kitchen. What must be one of the most impressive Receptions in the West End contains a mass of fibrous plaster features adjacent to a three-storey atrium with additional troughs and lighting at soffit level.

Stortford Interiors recently won the 2007 Association of Interior Specialists Gold Award (Ceilings – Large contracts £100,000 and over) for this project.

Cornwall Court, Birmingham

This fit-out was BCO AWARD WINNING PROJECT: “BEST OF BEST” IN 2004. A 100,000 sq/ft remodelling and fit-out of PWC’s existing premises was undertaken to demanding timescales and the building was occupied throughout the entire process. Stortford Interiors undertook mineral fibre ceilings, drywall partitions, glazed partitions and joinery. Extremely close working with our Client’s team helped to ensure PWC’s new office space in Birmingham being named the most dynamic work environment in the UK.

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK)


FLEXILABS

The need for GSK to respond to the new and changing R&D environment led to the development of the FlexiLab concept - a completely flexible laboratory design solution.

Scientists were often impeded by laboratories with fixed furniture, fume cupboards and a rigid services infrastructure with little scope for change.

The novel but fully tested FlexiLab concept allows the laboratory workspace to constantly evolve to respond to GSK's new and changing R&D environment. The need is for a scientific work space that can be rapidly installed and be reconfigured simply when required. The FlexiLab concept provides this with minimal disruption.

FlexiLab principles are endorsed by GSK and being implemented on a global basis. FlexiLabs are being successfully applied throughout all GSK European Operations R&D facilities.

The timescales for installing these projects are extremely tight and involve working in conjunction with a number of other contractors on site. Due to Stortford Interiors' successful high spec, high quality and well-managed installation, work is on going with GSK on this particular project across their numerous laboratories.

Stortford Interiors has been the major contractor for the installation of the ceilings and walls of the FlexiLab system at several GSK sites, including their largest one-off laboratory project - the Triple FlexiLab at their site in Stevenage. The FlexiLab concept uses high spec products based around Komfort Polar silicone glazed full glass partitions, including glass doors and Burgess metal pan ceilings.

GlaxoSmithKline Hertfordshire


Stortford Interiors has an established relationship with GSK, and is recognised as a preferred contractor. As such, project work is on going across several of the GSK sites in Hertfordshire. Some of the more recent projects are detailed below.

Stortford Interiors has also installed specialist plasterboard ceilings and Komfort double glazed partitions to the management suites at GSK's offices in Stevenage.
GSK Harlow and Welwyn

Project work at GSK in Harlow and Welwyn has involved the installation of partitions, ceilings and various types of flooring, together with smaller scale refurbishment work.

Another award winning project demanding a plethora of distinctive architectural detail from Stortford’s. Angled sloping dry-walls around the central core of the building and reception area form meeting rooms complemented by glazed partitioning. M/F and metal ceiling expanses are broken up by curves, bulkheads and upstands to add visual interest and to signify different areas for different office functions and activities. Further flexibility is facilitated by curved glazing and curved solid walls. Joinery and Doorsets completed Stortford’s scope of works.

Hertz Cars

Stortford Interiors employed their considerable glass and dry-wall partition knowledge to satisfy the aesthetic and performance requirements of Hertz Cars new European Head Office. The works involved the installation of a series of acoustic rated glass partitions with dry-wall interfaces to form a contemporary offices configuration spread over three floors.

Full height glass and timber doors created a modern working environment that was complimented by curved and raking bespoke feature walls.

Stortford Interiors worked in close conjunction with the specified product manufacturers to ensure lead times were minimised and critical dates met.

The quality of this prestigious installation was recognised by the ‘Association of Interior Specialists’ who awarded the works a ‘Highly Recommended’ accolade.

Duxford - Airspace Exhibition building

Client: Major National Contractor

Scope of work: Drywall partitions and ceilings, structural partitions and ceilings (Knauf SBS)

Colin McEvoy and his team undertook the strip-out and refurbishment of the Imperial War Museum at Duxford in late 2005 and early 2006. This drywall-based project called for walls in excess of forty feet high and for structural walls and ceilings to demanding specifications. The Client's preparations for this project involved moving all his full size planes - from Spitfires to Concords - out of the area to be refurbished and then back in again. One of the East of England’s major tourist attractions is now full of Stortford's work!

London Academy


Edgware, Middlesex

A five-month fit-out at one of the new wave of flagship Academies. Full height glazed partitions grace a four-storey high atrium running the entire length of the building. Further glazed partitions and doorsets create a network of classrooms, quiet study areas and staff rooms. Stortford Interiors also undertook all the M/F and metal ceilings and fit-out elements to the Gym, changing rooms and WC blocks. This project was notable for the majority of the installation being undertaken by Stortford’s directly employed fixing crews.

Over three phases, Stortford undertook the Drywall and Ceilings – M/F, fibrous plaster, mineral fibre – to Tiffany’s flagship store interlinking London’s Old Bond Street and Albermarle Street. And all to Tiffany’s unique and exacting standards (replicated in stores throughout the world). Premium West End retail space such as this meant that all deadlines were non-negotiable and activities continued around the clock when necessary.

The Stanway School

Stortford Interiors utilised their multi-disciplined experience to deliver this expansive educational installation. Stortford Interiors satisfied this stringently programmed project to ensure handover dates were met to enable the school to become ‘live’ at the beginning of the new term.

The works evolved primarily around classroom and music room fit-outs where product durability and acoustic performances were of great importance.

This project was yet another successful public sector installation for Stortford Interiors.

Raytheon Systems Ltd Harlow, Essex


Stortford Interiors has worked with Raytheon Systems as their principle contactor for many years providing a wide range of refurbishment services. Examples include the refurbishment of their five factory units in Harlow, and the recent relocation of their missile testing facility from Bedford to Harlow.

The scope of works for Raytheon Systems on an on-going basis includes partitions, ceilings, flooring, electrical work, plumbing, sanitary, decoration and M&E.

Raytheon Systems require their strategic partners to attain SixSigma. As a preferred supplier, Stortford Interiors have complied with and undergone training and passed SixSigma certification. SixSigma is Raytheon's knowledge based process for transforming culture to maximise customer value and grow business. This certification is recognised by other major companies such as Tyco and MK Electric.

E2V


Stortford Interiors provide E2V, formerly Marconi, with a responsive service to carry out partitioning and ceiling work in line with their ever evolving production requirements. We are working with industrial type steel partition systems, suspended ceilings, carpets and vinyl flooring.

BAE Systems Chelmsford


The scope of works provided by Stortford Interiors for BAE Systems includes regular dismantling and installation of partitioning. We have recently refurbished toilet and shower areas, and are currently refurbishing their ground floor area, which involves the movement of over 200m of partitioning.

The Department for International Development (DFID)


Due to the sensitive and prestigious environment of the DFID, the scope of works carried out by Stortford Interiors are mostly undertaken outside normal office hours, and involve on-going partition refurbishment.

In recent years we have carried out major refurbishments acting as CONEL's principle contractor. Refurbishment areas have included small work units for training purposes, gym with changing room facilities, disabled changing rooms complying with DDA regulations and relocation of classroom walls. The scope of works has included partitioning, ceilings, carpeting, M&E, plumbing and decorating.

We are currently refurbishing a Crèche area over the summer period, together with a range of partitioning and ceiling work throughout the college.

Category: Ceilings and Value Bank over £100K

Client: Cleary Gottlieb Steen Hamilton, City Place House, London

The judges quoted "The extensive well-finished MF ceilings were well designed and installed to a high standard. There was meticulous attention to setting out and detail throughout - particularly in the fine presentation area, where the ceiling is not only an odd shape but is raking, stepped and curved". The judges were particularly impressed with the perfectly constructed circular layered plasterboard feature ceiling, which they felt created a most pleasant ambiance in the reception area.

2004 BCO "Best of the Best"

Awarded to Wates Interiors for delivery of the Price Waterhouse Coopers project, whose new office space in Birmingham was named the most dynamic work environment in the UK. Stortford Interiors were closely associated with Wates Interiors on this project. The scope of work carried out by Stortford Interiors included partitions, ceilings, joinery and glasswalls.

The Team

Jim Nania - Managing Director

Jim Nania has been working in the interior fit-out and partitioning industry since 1971. He established Stortford Interiors in 1991, with the clear vision to concentrate on and target the UK interior fit-out market.

He recruited experienced personnel, who together with him, brought specialist technical knowledge, problem solving and value engineering to the business. Together, they have successfully positioned the company as one of the leading UK specialist contractors, and the company continues to grow year on year, whilst remaining financially profitable.

Jim is a former President of The Association of Interior Specialists.

Andrew Foy - Operations Director

By his own admission, Andrew “stumbled” into the industry in 1985 after completing a BA Honours Degree in Economics and Politics! He has done almost every job involved in an Interiors Company – Site Manager, Contract Manager, Commercial Manager – and values the all-round experience that that has brought.

After a two year spell with Jim Nania in the early ‘90’s Andrew spent eleven years with another leading Interiors sub-contractor, establishing a London office and making it to Board Director in 2001. In that time he also furthered his education with a BSc Honours in Law and Management and undertook professional studies culminating in Membership of the Chartered Institute of Building in January 2001.

Andrew rejoined Jim in November 2003 as Operations Director for Stortford Interiors.

Andy Pope - Business Development Director

Andy Pope has over 30 years experience in the industry. He started his career as a trainee surveyor for Walter Lawrence Ltd. A move to Norwood Partitions (formerly known as Blakdale NSE Ltd) in their estimating department soon saw him rise to be one the youngest chief estimators.

Redundancy in the early 80s provided an opportunity for Andy to join a young, up and coming interiors company, where he gained extensive knowledge of the direct business sector and its products, and at the same time he was able to develop a strong client base.

A move to Stortford Interiors in 1998 to join his old Norwood colleague, Jim Nania, led to the establishment of the company’s progressively growing direct division.

Ian Collingridge - Pre-Contracts Director

Ian Collingridge is a board member of Stortford Interiors and has responsibility as Pre-Contract Director for the day to day running of the Estimating Department, pricing commercial ‘contract’ projects. He joined Stortford Interiors at its conception back in 1991.

Ian first started his career job estimating for Ruberoid, pricing commercial roofing and patent glazing systems. He later moved into the world of office interiors in 1976, joining Office & Storage Techniques in Harlow, where he gained a wealth of specialist knowledge and experience within the Industry.

Nigel Rivers – Commercial Director

Nigel, Contracts Director at Stortford Interiors, joined the company in January 2007 to further strengthen the commercial team and drive an improved level of customer service.

Nigel has a broad experience of building industry sectors, having worked in retail, commercial, petro-chemicals, healthcare and education amongst others. His last role was with AMEC, as commercial manager where he worked for the past 16 years. He was involved with project values spanning from £0.25m to £150m, responsible for pre-tender preparations, contract negotiations, and design co-ordination and development as well as project management and delivery strategies.

Having started his career as a trainee surveyor with Fairclough Building Ltd. in 1978, Nigel went on to achieve an OND and HND in Building Studies at Suffolk College before qualifying for full membership of the CIOB.

Steve Abbey - Contract Manager, Direct Sales

Steve Abbey has 20 years experience within the industry, having started his career at 16 with a well established Partition & Ceiling Fitter. After a few years Steve broke away from his mentor and set up on his own working on a Sub-Contract basis for Keysan Ltd., where he worked all over the country, with a couple of short stints in Germany.

In 1995 Steve, aided by his increasing team of fitters, sub-contracted to Stortford Interiors Ltd., and continued to complete a large amount of contracts on their behalf right up until 2001, when he joined the company as Installation Manager working specifically on the Direct side of the business. He has since been promoted to Contracts Manager and has passed an SMSTS five day course, and holds various CSCS cards.

Steve's forte within the company is his knowledge of the systems available and their components.

Colin McEvoy - Contract Manager, Contracts

Colin joined Stortford Interiors in 2004 and is responsible for contract operations within the Contracts side of the business. He is a registered assessor with the CITB, which allows him to train on-site personnel and assess experienced fixers and guide them towards NVQ qualifications.

Colin started his career in the construction industry back in 1974 as an apprentice for an interior fit-out company TIS Modular Structures. On completion of his training, he worked as an installation fixer of suspended ceilings, re-locatable partitions and dry lining. In 1991 he joined Specialist Ceiling Services Ltd. working as a Project Manager for 8 years before taking up the position of Contracts Manager.

Emma Hills ACCA - Senior Financial Controller

Emma joined Stortford Interiors in 1998 as a trainee accountant. She has been trained as a book-keeper, Accounts Technician and is now a Chartered Certified Accountant. Emma shortly expects to receive here BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting, and will be commencing a MBA programme.

Emma heads up the Finance Department and also has responsibility for Human Resources and Facilities, assisted by a dedicated team. Through her years of working with Stortford Interiors, she has gained valuable experience and an in-depth understanding of the Industry which is essential to her role.

£1.5 million contract win for Stortford Interiors

StrucutreTone UK has awarded a £1.5 million contract to Stortford Interiors to work on the Willis Building project in the City of London. The project, which is likely to be the biggest fit-out job in Britain in 2007, will be a landmark building on London’s skyline when completed in 2008. The project for Stortford Interiors will involve the installation of a range of drywall products, glazed partitions and suspended ceilings across 11 floors. The interior design for the Willis Building was carried out by architects Swanke Hayden Connell.

Stortford Interiors strengthens commercial team

Stortford Interiors (UK) Ltd., the specialist supply and installation contractor of wall, ceiling and total interior solutions, this week announced the arrival of Nigel Rivers as their new Commercial Manager, to further strengthen their commercial team, and drive an improved level of customer service.

Nigel comes to Stortford Interiors with a broad experience of building industry sectors, having worked in retail, commercial, petro-chemicals, healthcare and education amongst others. His last role was with AMEC, as Commercial Manager where he worked for the past 16 years.

With experience of tender preparations, contract negotiations, design co-ordination and development, Nigel is hoping to put his impressive background to good use, as he aims to elevate the commercial processes and disciplines within the Stortford Interiors’ business.

Having started his career as a trainee surveyor with Fairclough Building Ltd in 1978, Nigel went on to achieve an HND in Building Studies at Suffolk College before qualifying for full membership of the CIOB.

In addition to Nigel’s appointment being announced, it is also confirmed that Mark Packer has joined the Stortford Interiors’ commercial team as Senior Surveyor. Mark also comes from AMEC, where he worked closely with Nigel as part of his team. Marks’ main focus will be to help bring new commercial strategy to the company and create further business efficiencies in cost reporting, forecasting and valuation processes.
